Beeswax block: a new wax layer for your beeswax wraps
Beeswax wraps lose their cling over time. The sheet turns matt, it stops gripping around the rim of a bowl, and the wax layer is simply worn thin. The sheet does not need to be thrown away. It needs new wax.
The block is pure beeswax with nothing added. You grate a little of it over the sheet, lay it between sheets of baking paper in the oven on low heat, and let the wax soak back into the fabric.
How to renew a beeswax wrap
- Lay the sheet between two sheets of baking paper on a baking tray.
- Grate wax from the block and scatter a thin, even layer over it, a little extra where the sheet is most worn.
- Put the tray in the oven at 80 to 90 degrees.
- Take it out once the wax has melted and soaked into the fabric, after a couple of minutes.
- Lift the sheet out and let it cool flat. The wax sets within a minute.
Use slightly too little wax rather than too much, you can always repeat. Ordinary baking temperatures are too high: the wax then runs out of the fabric instead of into it. The full method is in the guide on renewing beeswax wraps in the oven.
Why it is worth it
- Pure beeswax, nothing added
- Gives the sheet its cling back instead of it ending up in the bin
- Naturally moisture regulating, as beeswax is
- One 40 gram block lasts for several rounds
About the bread bag: the bag can be given fresh wax when the coating wears thin, usually after 6 to 9 months. Grate the block finely, sprinkle a thin layer on the inside of a clean and completely dry bag, put baking paper underneath and on top, and place it in the oven at 70 degrees for a few minutes. Let the bag lie flat until it is completely cold. The full method is in the guide on renewing the beeswax bread bag.

Frequently asked questions
What can I use instead of cling film in the kitchen?
Beeswax wraps cover most of what cling film did. The sheet softens with the warmth of your hands and moulds around a bowl, a piece of cheese, half a cucumber or a plate of leftovers, and it stays closed on its own. It breathes, so cheese does not sweat and fruit stays firm. Rinse in cold water with mild soap, hang it to dry, and use the same sheet again for a year or more. For bread a beeswax bread bag is the right tool, and for liquids and raw meat you still want a lid or a sealed box.
