Beeswax Block: give your bread bag a new wax layer

The beeswax lining is what does the work in the bread bag: it lets the bread breathe and keeps the crust crisp and the crumb soft. After 6 to 9 months of regular use the lining starts to thin. The fabric looks dull and dry along the fold lines, water soaks in instead of beading, and the honey scent fades. The bag isn't worn out, it just needs new wax.

The Beeswax Block is 100% pure beeswax. One thin new layer restores the bag to near-new performance, and the whole job takes about fifteen minutes.

How to re-wax the bag

1. Make sure the bag is clean and completely dry.
2. Lay it flat on a sheet of baking paper.
3. Grate wax from the block and scatter a thin, even layer, with a little extra where the bag is most worn.
4. Place the second sheet of baking paper on top.
5. Iron gently on low heat (wool setting) until the wax melts and soaks into the fabric.
6. Hang the bag to cool. The wax sets within a minute.

Use slightly too little wax rather than too much, you can always repeat.

Note: the block is made for the bread bag. We don't recommend re-waxing beeswax wraps at home. Once a wrap loses its cling, compost it and replace it.
