A beeswax lined bread bag is reusable for a year or more, if you look after it properly. Washed the right way, with lukewarm water and mild soap on the inside, the bag keeps bread fresh for 7 to 10 days. One machine wash, on the other hand, can ruin the beeswax coating for good.
Why heat is the worst enemy of beeswax
The Vokshus bread bag is sewn from cotton and linen, with an inside coated in natural beeswax. The coating lets the bag breathe: moisture escapes, the crust stays crisp and the crumb stays soft.
Beeswax melts at around 62 to 65 °C and softens as early as 35 to 40 °C. The main rule is simple: anything warmer than lukewarm is too warm for the bag. The basics are set out in the guide on what a beeswax bread bag is.
Daily care: shake the crumbs out
Turn the bag inside out after every use and shake it well over the sink. Crumbs left behind draw in moisture, and moisture is what mould grows on. The bag does not need a wash every time: let it air for a couple of minutes with the clip open before the next loaf. More on the part moisture plays in the article on why home baked bread goes mouldy.
How to wash the beeswax bread bag step by step
-
1Turn the bag inside out
So the beeswax side faces out. Only the inside needs washing.
-
2Lukewarm water and a small blob of mild soap
Use lukewarm water, never hot: hot water softens the beeswax and dissolves it. Mild washing-up liquid or castile soap works. Avoid anything sold as "powerful grease cutting", because beeswax is itself a fat.
-
3Rub gently with your fingers
Do not use a scouring pad or a brush, the coating has to stay intact.
-
4Remove the soap
Wipe away every trace of soap with your fingers and a little lukewarm water.
-
5Never the whole bag in water
Do not soak the bag or hold it under running water, and do not wring it. Only the inside needs washing.
-
6Hang it up to air dry
Inside out, over a drying rack or the back of a chair. Turn it back once it is completely dry. Never a tumble dryer, a radiator or direct sunlight.
With daily use, a wash about every other week is enough, or whenever a lot of crumbs have built up; marks from dough or butter are washed off straight away.
Common mistakes that ruin the coating
- The whole bag in water: not needed, only the inside needs washing.
- Machine washing: the heat, the spin and the strong detergent strip the beeswax away.
- Hot water: above 40 °C the wax melts away in the sink.
- Strong detergents: grease cutting products break the beeswax down.
- Tumble dryer: far hotter than the wax can take.
- Scouring and wringing: leave micro cracks that stop the coating sealing.
- Ironing, even on a normal setting: the iron melts the wax out of the fabric instead of into it.
Signs that the bag needs care
The coating wears down gradually, most of all where the bag folds. Look for:
- The fabric looks dull and dry, especially along the fold lines and around the opening.
- Water droplets soak into the fabric instead of beading up.
- The natural scent of honey has gone.
- The bread dries out faster than it used to.
After 6 to 9 months of regular use this is normal: the bag is simply ready for new wax.
When the bag needs new wax
A fresh, thin layer of wax restores the bag to close to its original performance. Grate the beeswax block finely, sprinkle a thin layer on the inside of a clean and completely dry bag, and put it in the oven at 70 degrees for a few minutes. The full method is in the guide on renewing the beeswax bread bag.
How to store the bag when it is not in use
If the bag is going to sit unused for a while:
- Wash it and let it air dry completely: trapped moisture is the only risk.
- Keep it flat or loosely folded in a drawer.
- Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources: steady warmth dries the wax out.
- Do not pack it in airtight plastic; the bag needs to breathe in storage too.
- Leave the clip loose, so the fabric does not set into permanent fold lines.
Durability over time
| Period | Condition | Care |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 12 months | Full performance | Shake the crumbs out daily, wash every other week |
| 12 to 18 months | The coating thins out | Renew the wax 1 to 2 times |
| 18+ months | Still fully usable | Renew the wax regularly |
| Worn out | The fabric is worn thin | Compost it: cotton, linen and beeswax are natural materials |
