Can you freeze bread in a paper bag? The answer

Homemade bread and a Vokshus bread bag, a better choice than a paper bag in the freezer

The bread comes home in a paper bag, and it is tempting to put the whole thing straight in the freezer. We advise against it, because the paper does very little for the bread in there. Here is what happens, and what to use instead.

Short answer: No, we advise against it. Paper does not stop the dry freezer air, and the bread gets freezer burn. Use a Bivoks™ bread bag with a clip, a freezer bag or an airtight box.

What happens to bread in a paper bag in the freezer?

Paper has no wax and gives little protection. In the freezer the bread loses moisture through the paper. After a while the bread gets white, dry patches. This is freezer burn, and it takes both flavour and moisture with it. It is not dangerous, but the bread turns dry.

Frequently asked questions

Can you freeze bread in the bakery bag?

No, we advise against it. The paper does not stop the dry freezer air. Move it to a bag that closes properly.

Can you thaw bread in a paper bag?

Yes. The paper lets the moisture out while the bread thaws, so that works well.

Can the beeswax bag be frozen again and again?

Yes. Cold does not harm the beeswax, and the bag can be used just as before.
