What is a beeswax bread bag, and how does it work?

You have baked a loaf you are looking forward to slicing. A beeswax bread bag gives it a set place between meals, in a bag you can use again. Here you find out what the bag is made of, how to use it and what to look for before you choose.

Short answer: A beeswax bread bag is a sewn bag with a wax coating. VOKSHUS Bivoks™ is made of cotton and linen with beeswax on the inside. Put in cooled bread, fold the top and close with the clip.

From the bread board and back into the bag

At breakfast you open the bag and take out the bread. When you have sliced what you need, you put the rest back and fold the top again. It is a practical way to use the same bread packaging many times, instead of taking a new single-use bag.

  1. Cool the bread. Let freshly baked bread cool completely before you wrap it.
  2. Put it in the bag. Allow room above the bread to fold the top.
  3. Close with the clip. Open it again when it is time for the next meal.

Materials, size and closure

The VOKSHUS bread bag combines cotton and linen with beeswax on the inside. The bag measures 30.5 × 43 cm. Compare the size with the bread you usually buy or bake, and remember the space needed to close it.

Bread bag or beeswax wraps?

Choose by the shape of what you want to wrap. The bag has a ready opening for the bread and a top that folds over. Beeswax wraps are flat sheets that you shape with the warmth of your hands around food or over a bowl, following the product's instructions.

One routine for care

Shake out the crumbs after use. Hand wash when needed in cold water with mild soap, and let the bag air dry. Avoid hot water, the washing machine and the dishwasher. You will find the full method in the washing guide.

Check the fabric and the coating when you clean it. How long the bag can be used depends on wear and care. Read the current advice on renewing the wax before you treat the coating. More about the material is in the guide on beeswax and food contact.

For cafés and bakeries

Frequently asked questions before you choose

How long does the bread keep?
It varies with the type of bread, temperature and handling. Freeze portions you will not have time to eat. Throw away bread that has gone mouldy; it should not be tasted or rescued with heat.
Will the bag fit my bread?
Compare the bread with the bag's size, and allow room to fold the top. The shape of the bread matters too, not just the length.
What does it cost?
