How big a loaf can you really fit in a bread bag? The answer is easy to work out, and all you need is a ruler and your bread.
Black Month pack How to measure your loaf
- Measure the loaf at its widest point.
- Measure the height from bottom to top.
- Add the two numbers. If the total is under about 30 cm, the loaf has plenty of room across the bag.
- Measure the length. The loaf must be short enough compared with 43 cm that you can fold the top down and fit the clip.
The rule is simple because the bag is 30.5 cm wide when flat. Once open, the fabric has to go around the loaf, so width plus height is what counts.
These loaves fit
| Bread | Does it fit? |
|---|---|
| Round sourdough | Yes |
| Big family loaf | Yes |
| Tin loaf | Yes |
| Ciabatta | Yes |
| Rolls | Yes, several at a time |
| Whole baguette | Often too long, cut it in two |
What about the baguette?
A whole baguette is often longer than the bag. Cut in two, it fits nicely in the bread bag. If you eat a lot of baguettes, the baguette bag is made for exactly that shape. Read also how to keep a baguette crisp.
One bag or two?
Use one bag per loaf. That way each loaf has room and the top closes well. If you bake two loaves at once, one can go in the fridge and one in the freezer, each in its own bag.
